Part 3 - Instructional Ability Training:
All of your Driving Instructor Part 3 Instructional Ability training will take place in the Driving School car, after all that is going to be the environment in which you will conduct your business in the future.
When you have passed your Part 2 Test we will send you the Part 3 Workbook and a set of Visual Aids and Prompt Cards to prepare for your first practical training session in the Instructional Ability element of the Driving Instructor training course. You will need to complete the workbook ahead of your first day of training. The Part 3 training will take 7 days each with 6 hours training (42 hours total) which provides you with the relevant number of training hours required to apply for a Trainee Licence if this is a route you wish to pursue.
The course covers:
- Core Competencies - Fault Identification, Analysis and Remedial Action
- Instructional Techniques
- Communication Skills
- Job Specific Training
Within the four elements of the course you will learn how to match your teaching skills to the needs of individual pupils, plan and control lessons, ensure the safety of you and your pupil and give you the foundations on which to build a successful professional Approved Driving Instructor career. We will ensure that you are aware of and understand the Pre-Set Tests applicable for the Part 3 Instructional Technique test, but we firmly believe that understanding PSTs are part of the training to be a professional Driving Instructor, not the beginning and end of passing a test. Rather we take the holistic approach to give you the opportunity to be one of the best in the country in this profession.
The course is designed around the syllabus set by the Driving Standards Agency and will involve your Trainer adopting the rôle of a pupil at various stages of development as a Learner Driver. The course is intensive and requires complete commitment to achieve the required standard.
We also provide guidance about running your business, the legislative requirements you must meet as both a self-employed person and a Driving Instructor and we will share information about diary management and ways of marketing your business.
Your progress will be reviewed at the end of each day of training and you will receive written feedback from your Trainer on the progress made and areas in which further work is required. At the end of this element of our Driving Instructor training course your Trainer will conduct a mock test and advise whether or not you are ready to take the Part 3 Test. If you have not achieved the required standard further training will be offered at a reduced rate.
THE PART 3 INSTRUCTIONAL ABILITY TEST
You will take your Part 3 Instructional Ability Test at an ADI Testing Centre in your area. You will take the test in the School Car and be accompanied by your Trainer to the Test Centre. If you wish your Trainer to sit in the back of the car during the course of your test he will be more than happy to do so.
You need to take with you both parts of your Photo ID Driving Licence or a valid GB or Northern Ireland Driving Licence, (if you do not have a Photo Licence you will need to take your Passport as well) and your Appointment Letter or Email.
The Test will be conducted by the Examiner who will rôle play the part of two pupils. The Test is of 1 hour duration, divided into two half-hour phases. At Phase 1 the Examiner will portray the part of a beginner, or partly trained, pupil. At Phase 2 the Examiner will play the part of a trained pupil or full licence holder.
There are 10 Pre-Set Tests, one of which will be selected at random by the Examiner to enable you to demonstrate your ability to teach a pupil at the appropriate level on that subject.
The purpose of the test is to assess the quality of your instruction and your ability to pass your knowledge on by giving practical driving instruction to the Examiner in their role of a pupil.
In order to pass the test you will be assessed on three key subject areas - Core Competencies (the ability to identify, analyse and rectify driver errors), Instructional Techniques (methods used to resolve driving issues), Instructor Characteristics (how you deal with people).
At the end of the test the Examiner will go away to assess your performance and in order to qualify you must achieve a minimum of Grade 4 in each Phase. Once the Examiner has completed their assessment you will be given a debrief by the Examiner and your result.
You are allowed no more than 3 attempts to pass your Part 3 Test and you must pass both parts at the same test. If you fail at all 3 attempts you must wait 2 years from the date that you passed your Part 1 before beginning the process again.
You will find it helpful to watch the DSA videos about ADI Qualifying Tests on YouTube.

ADDITIONAL PRACTICAL TRAINING FOR EXTERNAL CANDIDATES
We also offer additional training for Part 3 candidates who have undertaken their training with other organisations and are approaching their final attempt at Part 3 and feel that the training they have received so far does not meet all their requirements. It is often useful in these circumstances to experience an alternative style of training to enable you to take a different perspective on your own delivery. Training is undertaken in 3 hour block sessions.
Sean from Essandelle Driver Training Services was a gentleman. He evaluated the key areas throughout to help me to be the driving instructor I became. He gave me the belief and confidence in myself to become a good instructor.
Sean is polite, punctual and honest. A great mentor."
